We are the ones who make a brighter day

We are the world

“We are the world, we are the children. We are the ones who make a brighter day” wrote Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie years back. It was Harry Belafonte originally who wanted to put together a benefit concert featuring black musicians to raise money for Africa. Many famous musicians came together and made a choir. That was 30 years back.

What about now?

From the Sustainable Development Goals we can read that 2016 presents an unprecedented opportunity to bring the countries and citizens of the world together to embark on a new path to improve the lives of people everywhere. Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development.

What about 2030?

The year 2030 is less than 15 years from now. We have a goal for that year: “Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning” (UN).

We are the world and we want this to come trough by 2030:

  • ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university.

  • substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship

  • ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development

  • build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all

  • substantially expand globally the number of scholarships available to developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States and African countries, for enrolment in higher education, including vocational training and information and communications technology, technical, engineering and scientific programmes, in developed countries and other developing countries

  • substantially increase the supply of qualified teachers, including through international cooperation for teacher training in developing countries, especially least developed countries and small island developing states

What can you do?

We need to do what we can do to be sure we can reach our goal. “We are the ones who make a brighter day.”
